Black Panther leaves Wakanda…

If you guys are still in the hangover of Black Panther movie, then get over it. Because Black Panther has been just spotted in India.  Say whaaattt???

Yes… Go and call Mowgli too… Bagheera is here!!!

A Black Panther has been spotted at Udanti-Sitandi tiger reserve in Chattisgarh. It is very rare for a person to spot a Black Panther.  Black Panther is not a separate genus of Leopard family, they are observed due to melanism in Leopards.

The visuals were obtained after the installation of over 200 camera traps across the tiger for over 80 days from December 2016 to April 2017.  Although many years ago a forest officer reportedly spotted a black panther in the area, no scientific records were found to back up his claim.

Black panthers are mostly found in dense tropical rain forest areas of South India, more in Karnataka. They are also found in Kerala and Assam.

The sightings of Black Panther in India are more in the following parks:-

  1. Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary.
  2. Kabini Wildlife Sanctuary(Nagarhole National Park).
  3. Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary(Bhadra Tiger Reserve).
  4. Sharavathi Wildlife Sanctuary.

As it is listed as Vulnerable species on IUCN Red List spotting black panther in the different part of India rather than South India can be a good indicator as it will be more helpful in the conservation of the species.
